1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar, VF30
Late Die State O-101a Variety
1794 50C VF30 PCGS. O-101a, R.4. An attractive VF30 example of the first U.S. half dollar issue, from a small mintage of 23,464 pieces. The O-101 variety is recognized by the position of star 1 piercing the lowest curl and the 10x11 berry arrangement on the wreath. In addition to the usual die break near the first S in STATES, this coin exhibits a longer crack through the F in OF, turning upward through the leaves and the final S in STATES, identifying the O-101a late die state.
This coin displays pleasing shades of gray, lavender, and ice-blue toning, with traces of original mint luster in sheltered areas. The design elements are worn on the high points, but much interior detail is still intact. The surfaces are lightly abraded, with no trace of planchet adjustment marks. Population: 21 in 30, 36 finer (8/13).(Registry values: N4719) (PCGS# 6051)
