The 1851 gold dollar is one of the common dates in the series. Although it is not as common as the 1852 and '53 coins, it is nevertheless fairly easy to find as a date and mint mark combination. Your author has noted, however, that Choice Mint State examples are getting harder to find. At the 2014 FUN show I was surprised to find that the "usually available" common date Type 1 gold dollars, aside from the 1853-P coin, were not in abundant supply in the MS-63 and higher grades.
The coin shown above qualifies for the MS-64 grade although the obverse has a more subdued satin finish, while the reverse displays stronger luster. The satin luster on the obverse is due to the state of the dies when the coin was stuck and has nothing to do with how the coin was treated or stored after it was issued.
