Owner Comments:
This little coin is a family heirloom on my wife’s side. As the story goes the father of my wife’s aunt received four quarter eagles for serving on a jury. How he would have been paid that much for jury duty is beyond me, but that was the story. They gave three of the coins to their daughters who ended up losing them. This fourth one they decided to sell to my wife and I since I am a collector. The coin was nice enough to get certified and so here it is.
It is a very nice example of the 1853 quarter eagle which is a common date in the series. It has been estimated that 1,250 examples of this coin have survived. That number seems quite low to me. I would place the number of survivors at closer to 8 to 10 thousand pieces in all grades.
