Owner Comments:

The Netherlands remained a neutral country during World War I. However, this stand was difficult to maintain since the allies blockaded the Dutch seaports. In response to the blockade, the Netherlands traded with Germany. After the war, the Netherlands granted asylum to Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany. When the allies tried to extradite the deposed German ruler, the strong willed Queen Wilhelmina called the diplomatic delegation into her presence and lectured them on the rights of asylum.

This 1917 NGC MS-66 10 Gulden coin has a mintage of 4,000,000.

Of all the coins in this set, this is the date with the most change. The first coin I purchased of this date was a NGC MS-65 bought on May 12, 2009. Although this coin met my criteria of grading MS-65 or higher, I also had a lesser goal for this set to be the best it can be. Consequently, I upgraded this coin to a NGC MS-66 on June 30, 2009. Looking back, I should have left it at that, but a PCGS coin at MS-67 proved to be too enticing. Realizing that I was never likely going to own a NGC MS-67 (NGC only grades four coins at that level for the entire Wilhelmina I series), I upgraded the NGC MS-66 on October 2, 2009 to PCGS MS-67. That coin remained unchanged until January 2012 when NGC excluded all PCGS coins from their world registry. This effectively left me with two options, one to wait for an adequate NGC coin to become available, or two to cross over my existing coin to NGC. Of those two options, my best choice was to cross the existing coin over to NGC. Subsequently, the PCGS MS-67 crossed over to NGC MS-66 and now unless one of two NGC MS-67's for this date becomes available, this MS-66 will stand as this dates final coin.
