Owner Comments:

Having lost the 1824 election to Adams through the Corrupt Bargain, Andrew Jackson vowed revenge, and in the 1828 election, he got it. Considered by many historians as the dirtiest campaign in history, the two candidates ignored the issues and vehemently attacked the character of the other. In the end, Jackson triumphed and began the first of his two terms, serving from 1829 to 1837. Jackson was a no-nonsense leader, pushing his agenda on the country with a dogged determination. His controversial decision to forcably relocate all the indian tribes east of the Mississippi, against the will of the Supreme Court, resulted in the Cherokee Trail of Tears, where one in four died enroute. He also battled the Bank of the United States, calling it a 'hydra-headed monster' that needed to be vanquished, which he did, setting up the econmoic disasters that would plague his successor. As a side note, during the campaign, his opponent's called him a 'jackass', an image Jackson liked so much it became the symbol of the new Democratic Party.
