Owner Comments:

An accomplished politian, Van Buren was Andrew Jacksons hand-picked replacement. Serving from 1837 to 1841, Van Buren looked upon his presidency as the reward for a lifetime of service. He hoped that his term would be easy, but history would not oblige. The fallout from Jacksons battle with the Bank of the United States would fall smack into Van Burens lap. No sooner had he taken office, the economy took a turn for the worse. There was a glut in the cotton market, and since 60% of the revenue of the United States came from cotton, this was a disaster. Another issue was Van Burens image; he was seen as an effeminate dandy, which was not good in the rough and tumble politics of the early 1800s.
