Owner Comments:

In 1860 the legend, “United States of America” was moved from the reverse of the half dime and dime to the obverse of the coin. The wreath on the reverses of both pieces was enlarged and included a number of American agricultural products, which was a reflection of the 19th century U.S. agrarian economy. The Legend Obverse dime was made in large quantities, especially in the 1880s and early 1890s, and is one of the more common 19th century American silver coins.

The 1875 dime shown above is exceptionally well preserved Proof specimen. The total mintage was 700 pieces in Proof. This example has the “cameo” appearance which means that the devices (the seated liberty figure, letters, date and wreath) are frosted while the fields are bright and mirrored. As such this is a premium designation for Proof coins produced from the mid 1800s through the 1970s.
