This coin commemorates Paul von Hindenburg. Hindenburg was a Prussian army officer considered to be the most famous German War hero of his time. He was convinced to enter politics and became Germany's second President. In January of 1933 he was succeeded by Hitler and appointed Hitler Chancellor. Shortly thereafter Hitler took complete control of Germany with the results of course being well known history.

Given that Hitler and Hindenburg disliked each other greatly I think this coin, minted during the Third Reich is representative of the propaganda machine that the Nazi's had in place. Neither party wanted to be associated with each other but Hindenburg's popularity and Military service certainly carried great value to the Third Reich. It's this dichotomy of the coin between Hindenburg and Hitler that drew my interest.
