Owner Comments:

The 1905 Lewis and Clark gold dollar is considered to be one of the scarcest coins in the 11 piece early commemorative gold type set. Although the net mintage of 10,041 pieces is almost the same as 1904 Lewis and Clark dollar, it is scarcer both in numbers and preservation. MS-64 examples of this coin are quite scarce and pieces grading MS-65 and higher are rarities.

There has been speculation that a hoard of these coins existed from 1905 until the Gold Surrender Order of 1933. At the time of the Gold Surrender Order, this hoard may have been turned into the U.S. Government and melted.

The present coin is a very attractive, lustrous example of this very scarce coin. It has virtually no marks. Its only fault is some evidence of the common seen die failure on the reverse.
