Owner Comments:
In 2009 the U.S. mint expanded the State Quarter series to include five United States’ territories plus the District of Columbia. The result was six additional quarters that collectors could easily add to their State Quarter collections. The territories were American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and The United States Virgin Islands. The District of Columbia quarter featured Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington (1899 – 1974) who has been described as one of the greatest figures in the history of jazz. Ellington adapted his music to include blues, gospel, movie soundtracks and classical. His interpretations of many forms of music into the jazz format elevated jazz to an art form. In 1999 the Pulitzer Prize committee recognized Ellington’s achievements with a special citation.
