Owner Comments:

In 1866 the motto “In God we trust” was added to U.S. coins that were large enough to accommodate the addition without a major design change. The motto had first appeared on the Two Cent Piece during the Civil War in response to the many horrors that had occurred during the conflict. The motto had first appeared on a scroll in the Two Cent Piece design, and a similar device was used for the quarter, half dollar and silver dollar in addition to the five and ten dollar gold coins.

The half dollar shown above is a very choice, never dipped or cleaned Proof piece with attractive mirrored surfaces below the toning.
