Owner Comments:
The Liberty gold coins were first minted in 1838. The quarter eagle, half eagle, and eagle all used a design similar to the Coronet cent, while the double eagle used a slightly modified design. These gold coins were minted until 1907/1908. The double eagle has three varieties: Type 1 has no motto; Type 2 uses the motto "In God We Trust" but retains the denomination "Twenty D." attribute; and the Type 3 uses the motto with "Twenty Dollars" on the reverse. Only the Type 3 was used in the 20th century.
This gem-graded beauty is a great example of the type. 1904 is the most affordable year to find in MS65.
