The 1855-P gold dollar is the second most common coin in the Type II gold dollar set after the 1854-P. Like the other date and mint mark combinations in this the series the "LL" in "DOLLAR" and the "8" in the date are often weakly struck because the relief of the head of Ms. Liberty on the obverse was set too high for this very thin coin. Although the prices for these coins are high, due mostly to type collector demand, these coins are not rare or even scarce. Nevertheless collectors view any example that is attractive and well struck with little or no wear as a very desirable numismatic item.
The coin show above is exceptionally nice for the MS-63 grade. It is sharply stuck with all of the design elements evident. The color is a vibrant gold with full luster showing on both sides no spots
The only production negative is that there are obvious clash marks on both sides. These marks result when the dies are struck together without a coin planchet between them. This results in shadow images of the reverse design on the obverse and the obverse design on the reverse. Sometimes inexperienced collectors view this marks as post mint damage which they are not.
