Owner Comments:
The 1852-D gold dollar is a "sleeper" in the Type I gold dollar set. Although the coin is not as rare as the marquee dates in the set, the 1850-D and 1854-D, it is nevertheless a very scarce piece. Doug Winter estimates that the total number of 1852-D gold dollars in the collectable grades numbers between 125 to 175 pieces.
This date and mint mark combination is noted for extensive clash marks. These occurred when the obverse and reverse dies come together without a planchet (coin blank) between them. As a result elements of the design from each side are visible on the coin, especially in the fields. This makes many 1852-D gold dollars look "busy."
The 1852-D gold dollar shown above is a very attractive AU-55 with original surfaces. It has the usual clash marks in from of Ms. Liberty's face, but the hair detail is strong, and there are no distracting marks.
