Set Description
.The DOUBLE DIME - The Short Lived 20 Cent Piece
(Click thumbnails for larger size images)

The short lived 20 Cent pieces authorized by the Act of March 3, 1875, may have been given a fighting chance for survival if one of the attractive patterns were adopted. While there were several dimensions to its demise, one significant factor was the 1875 20 Cent piece design and size were very close to the quarter dollar in circulation and the population complaint immediately as it was easily confused during trade with the quarter dollar piece.

In this Pattern collection, I am attempting to collect a sample of each of the 9 die combinations, independent of the metals, for the 1874 & 1875 20 Cent patterns.

The1874 patterns (the year prior to the actual 20 Cent pieces were put into circulation) a motif used was attributed to J.A. Baily’s design prepared in 1873 for a trade dollar. Two reverse designs were combine with this obverse.

Immediately after congress authorized the 20 Cent piece several trial pieces dated 1875 were submitted for consideration but were not selected by the director. He defaulted back to the Seated Liberty Design as it match the other denominations in production.

The Liberty Head design by William Barber was one Pattern submitted and it was highly praised at the time and for the Numismatist call this design the “Sailor Head” (J1392-J1395). Barber used this design on several other patterns of the year and beyond..

Another interesting obverse was the “Seated Liberty by the Seashore” with Miss Liberty sitting on a globe. Q. David Bowers pointed out an abnormally with the design as the Steamboat with Sails (not uncommon in the time period) is seen from the seashore having the smoke from the stack being blown back in one direction while the sail are being blown in the opposite direction.

Another interesting design feature for several patterns was the reverse with the dual notation to express the denomination. “1/5 OF A DOLLAR” within an open wreath and “TWENTY CENTS” below the wreath. This may have been an attempt to address the problem of mistaken identify with the Quarter Dollar but it would be of interest as to what percent of the population would understand how to calculate 1/5 of a dollar since it was not a common ratio in our currency. Maybe the repeat of the “TWENTY CENTS “ was for the avoidance of doubt as to the worth of the coin? This reverse was pair with 2 different obverses and my set holds a J-1407 example.

Struck in White Metal with plain edge

Obverse: This uniface die trial shows UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA across the upper obverse with the date below. No central device is present.

Reverse: Unstruck

Comment:
This is one of two examples known. Saul Teichman, writing for USPatterns.com, explains: "It is unclear if this [is] for an obverse or a reverse design or if it is really for a 20 cent piece. It is more likely a design for a medal or token of some sort."

The pewter-gray obverse is partly lustrous, and the devices on that side are sharp. A small centering dot is apparent. The unstruck reverse is rough and porous.

Ex Lumus :

Struck in copper with a plain edge.

Obverse: :The central figure of the obverse is a seated Liberty facing left, with Liberty pole and globe. The globe is inscribed LIBERTY. The figure is surrounded by two bales of cotton, a tobacco plant, and a sheaf of wheat. An arc of 13 stars surrounds the figure above with the date below.

Reverse: :The reverse die is similar to the design adopted for regular issue coinage except for minor differences in leaf position, and the second arrowhead points above the T in TWENTY.

Comment: :
The popular design for the obverse is attributed to the French-born sculptor Joseph Alexis Bailly. Mint Director Linderman foresaw difficulties with the twenty cent piece because of its close resemblance to the quarter. He specifically requested a pattern of this design to help differentiate between the two coins. In the end, the Seated Liberty obverse was adopted, and Linderman's concerns proved valid. The new denomination was extremely unpopular, and was abandoned after only four years. USPatterns.com estimates about one dozen examples are extant.

Mint red color lingers in protected areas near the devices, while the fields are highlighted with attractive crimson and lilac toning. All details of the intricate design are clearly delineated.

Ex: Denali Collection.

Struck in copper with a plain edge.

Obverse: William Barber's "Sailor Head" obverse design that shows Liberty facing left and wearing a coronet. Her hair is tied in the back with two ribbons, thus resembling a sailor's cap. This is combined with the drapery around her shoulders also gives the appearance of a collar as found on a sailor uniform.

Reverse: A three-pointed shield as the central motif with 20 sunken in the middle, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / CENTS around the margins. rays appear to come from the top of the shield and arrows and olive branches cross at the base.

Comment::
Orange-gold, plum-red, and lavender compete for territory across this intricately struck and contact-free specimen. Neither side shows any spots. The present design might have been more successful than the issued types, since no one would have confused the denomination with a Seated quarter

The Sailor Head design was also used on half eagle and eagle patterns of 1875, dollar patterns of 1876, and dime, quarter, half dollar, and dollar patterns of 1877 and Walter Breen also equate the bust with that of Queen Victoria's portrait "YOUNG HEAD"

Struck IN silver with Plain Edge

Obverse: The popular "Liberty at the Seashore" design with an arc of 13 stars above and the date, 1875 below. Liberty is seated facing left and holds an olive branch in her right hand and rests her left hand on a globe with the word LIBERTY inscribed. A steamship is to the left, and behind Liberty, a wheat sheaf and two flags can be seen.

Reverse: Very similar to the design used for regular 20 cent coinage, except for minor leaf position changes.

Comment: Mostly brilliant with light peripheral patina and fully struck with sharp contrast. A few hairlines in the fragile fields serve to limit the grade.

Interesting that the ship sails to the east (right) with sails billowed in the forward direction, however, the smoke from the stack is trailing behind the ship, to the west!

Struck in copper with reeded Edge

Obverse: Liberty is seated by the seashore, facing left, an olive branch in her right hand, her left hand resting on the globe inscribed LIBERTY in raised letters. Two flags and a wheat sheaf are behind the portrait, a small steamship on the water in the distance with sails and smoke going in opposite directions. Thirteen stars encircle the border and the date 1875 is below.

Reverse: An olive wreath encircles the denomination 20 CENTS with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border.

Comment: This is beautiful near-Gem piece that exhibits dominant deep olive-copper patina, both sides with iridescent undertones in vivid gold, apricot, pink and/or cobalt blue shades. Fully struck with appreciably mirrored fields, this is a delightful example of one of the most popular twenty-cent patterns of the date

Rarity: Low R.6, PR63 Cameo

Struck in silver with a plain edge.

Obverse: Similar to the adopted 20 Cent die, although LIBERTY is incused rather than raised as on the regular-issue coins the date is smaller.

Reverse: Exhibits the denomination 1/5 OF A DOLLAR centered within a laurel wreath (similar in design to the 3CN pieces) and the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border but most unique is another expression of the denomination TWENTY CENTS below.

The Mint must have been wary of customers confusing these twenty cent pieces with the Seated quarter counterparts.

Just over a dozen examples are known in silver with a similar number extant in copper, and a few pieces also known in aluminum and nickel. This is a mostly brilliant example with deeply mirrored fields and frosted devices sharply struck and just a hint of purple-blue toning around the margins.

Comment:
The dual denominations format may have indicated the Mint was wary of customers confusing these twenty cent pieces with their Seated quarter counterparts. The verbose legend forces a simple wreath motif, similar to that of the issued three cent nickel. . Just over a dozen examples are known in silver with a similar number extant in copper, and a few pieces also known in aluminum and nickel.

This is a mostly brilliant example with deeply mirrored fields and frosted devices to set apart with a full strike and softly frosted texture and just a hint of purple-blue toning around the margins Only a few wispy hairlines to preclude a higher numeric grade.

Struck in copper with a plain edge

Obverse: The obverse is similar to the regular twenty cent design, but LIBERTY is incused as on other Seated Liberty pieces.

Reverse: The reverse is also similar to the regular issue, but the leaves in the branch are slightly different, and the stars between the legend and denomination are smaller.

Comment: The reverse die was used on a number of pattern twenty cent varieties and can be identified by broad repunching on the final A in AMERICA.
