In this group there are 4 patterns (T20,T21T22 and T26) that are differentiated by weight, diameter and thickness. The same dies were used resulting in a clear "1" denomination on the reverse and includes "Penny" written below the number. The thickest been 4.83 mm and mass of 24.78 gm and the lightest 10.09 mg and a thickness of just 1.91 mm. 2 patterns have an estimate of 100 been made (T20 and T22) and 2 have no records of how many had been made (T21 and T26). The obverse of the coin has the Transvaal coat of arms (flags) and the reverse depicts the numeral and a reference in Dutch "Eeendragt Maak Mag" which in the english language means "Unity is strength".

One pattern exists of the Transvaal dated 1890. There is an estimated 100 pieces in existence however both NGC and PCGS only indicate a smaller percentage have been graded (21 to 30). Given the huge number (100) it is difficult to imagine that numbers of 50 or more actually exist. Grades have known to have reached PF66 (only know of two) but throughout the ZAR series majority grades range from XF up to a high of PF65 (Rare and in this collection!). The obv features the Transvaal coat of arms and the reverse has a oak and laurel branch circling the denomination. There is a small "V" below the two branches. The coin composition is Bronze. The diameter is 30.48 mm, weight 9.48 gm and the thickness 2.18 mm. The coin appearance is a red/brown in nature and the motive is not cluttered which makes the pattern fairly elegant and of a good hand size. In this collection there are 4 proof (PF65 to PF63) and 3 Mint State (MS65 to MS64). All are of the Red brown colour.

A unique 2 pattern coin in the series that is predominantly made up of 1 penny denominations. In this series it is rare to obtain a proof with the majority graded as mint state. The obv depicts the Transvaal coat of arms with the Dutch wording "Zuid Afrkaansche Republiek" translated into English this means "South African Republic". On the reverse is the lettering "Eendragt maakt magt" translated it means "Unity is strength". The two small mint marks on the reverse (flanking the date) depict a honeybee and a lion's head. The coin mass is 10.9 mg (fairly light), diameter of 30.48 mm and a thickness of 1.91 mm. In the collection there are MS62BN ranging up to MS64RB (brown to red brown seems the natural colour of the coin and there are no reports of alternative colors listed). Uniquely there is one PF64Bn in the collection. Hern's book references that only 50 were ever made.

An extremely rare pattern piece of which there are single digit figures reported (perhaps 5 or less in this range)! Only 3 recorded in NGC with 2 graded MS62 (Highest) and one at AU55. These are the original patterns used for the Gold Burgers Ponds made in 1874. The Hern's catalogue references that there are several variations of this pattern (Struck by Heaton & Son in England) with a few having large and small dates, 2 flagpoles only instead of 3, struck in different material (silver, copper, aluminum, brass) and changes in the beard on the obverse.
The obverse depicts President Burgers portrait with his name overarching on the top of the coin. Legend has it that President Burger made the decision to produce gold coins with the bust of him on the obverse without the consent of the committee. This sparked severe criticism and the committee who opposed any further coinage been issued with President Burgers bust on it. The majority of these gold Ponds was seen as a novelty by the citizens and only a few years later (as gold had not yet been discovered in the Transvaal) due to the scarcity of gold, did the coinage start to be circulated. The obverse is the Transvaal coat of arms. The composition of the coin is Bronze, the mass varies with the different patterns (4.27 down to 4.18 mg), thickness at 1.78mm and the diameter 22.23mm (similar in size to the gold Pond produced in 1874).

Grade: NGC PF 61

Only 5 estimated each of the two types of aluminum 5 shillings (Crown) are thought to exist. The difference between the two is purely the weight, diameter and size of the coin. The coins are fairly light been aluminum. The same dies were used. President Burgers bust is on the obverse and the Transvaal coat of Arms on the reverse. There are silver and bronze gilt patterns and, although very similar at first glance, the difference in the design do vary (reeded, smooth edge, smaller size with different sized dates etc). In my opinion, any aluminum coin able to grade in a proof state is remarkable as aluminum seems to produce poor quality coinage.

There are two pattern types listed in the Hern's catalogue with variations in size, weight and thickness. There is no change in the design or the metal (Bronze). The obverse is the Coat of Arms of the Orange Free State Province that has three bugles, a orange tree in the middle with the words "Oranje Vrij Staat" written in Dutch. The mint mark at the bottom are of a face and a lion. There is no clear understanding why these two mint marks had been used or if they had been requested.
On the reverse is an oak and laurel branch surrounding the denomination (In Dutch) "Een" one, with the words "Penny" and the date below. At the bottom, in Dutch the wording "Muntspreove" proof mint. The weight between the coins are significant with the lighter coin only weighing 9.74 and the second 24.98 (almost triple the weight of the first). Mintage estimated figures for the lighter coin is estimated at 100 and the thicker coin unknown. Although the book suggests 100 minted. As a collector I have found that the 1874 coin the hardest to acquire thus, in my opinion there are far less than noted in the catalogue. I note that there is one higher grade but in the RD colour only 2 graded.

The Coat of Arms of the Orange Free State.
An Orange tree (showing several oranges on) above three bugles. although oranges do grow in the Free State the name of the province was derived from the Orange river that is in the province. The river colour is orange from the type of soil washed down from the mountains.
