UNION THALERS OF GERMAN STATES

Category:  World Coins
Owner:  Thalermaniac
Last Modified:  4/27/2024
Set Description
Union Thaler, or Vereinsthaler, was the name of the Taler minted after Monetary Convention in Vienna on January 24, 1857 between thirty five German States, Austria and Liechtenstein. This was last attempt to unify multiple currencies of different German lands which created a lots of custom issues in between the countries. This Convention adopted completely new standard - instead of traditional Cologne Mark (233.856 g of silver) it switched to the metric one - "Zollpfund" or German Pound (500 g of fine silver). Each Zollpfund was divided by 30 Thalers, smaller by weight but having higher silver content to compare with traditional Prussian reichsthaler (18.5200 g., 0.9000 Silver 0.5359 oz ASW to compare with 22.2720 g., 0.7500 Silver 0.5370 oz. ASW). Multiple States adopted coins of One and Two Vereinsthaler or "The Muenzverein Talers" each of ones has Indicator "XXX EIN PFUND FEIN" ( on single ones) or "XV EIN PFUND FEIN" ( for Doppeltalers). The Union Thalers were circulating across the German States untill the beginning of the Austro- Prussian War in 1866. Vereinstaler was completely replaced by Mark as the unit of coinage (5 Mark coins) in 1874.

This die reflects younger king, no mustache or facial hair. Reverse dies were designed by Johann Ries with new ornament under the arms as well as slightly different design of the supporting lions - tails up etc....Small amount of this coins were minted in 1871 - exact mintage number is unknown. We got lucky to have one graded as MS 63 by NGC - top population and the only one graded as we know about.
