Owner Comments:
The 1837 half eagle is a deceptively scarce coin. Some observers have compared it with the 1838-D half eagle. It is the scarcest date among the Philadelphia Mint Classic Head half eagles. Only the 1834, Crosslet 4 half eagle is scarcer among the Classic head $5.00 gold coins that are listed in "The Red Book."
Using information from the Newman Portal, I was able to trace this piece back to the 1976 ANA auction, which was conducted by Stacks'. This piece was graded AU in that sale. The current MS-61 grade, which PCGS assigned to this piece is a reflection of the current market practices.
