1872 Curly Haired Man charm attached to a stick pin and came with an antique box. This California Gold token is believed to have been struck in 1872 by Frontier & Belemere. It is made of solid low karat gold of about 14K fineness. Jay Roe claimed these tokens are 9K gold with plating of pure gold. Pin section is possibly gold plated. The pin measures 5.5 cm or about 2 1/8" long. The total weight of the charm and pin is .54 grams. The charm and pin are in nice condition. Piece is very attractive with vibrant gold color. Charm shows very mild wear and toning. The twist design pin is straight and very sturdy.
Token is catalogued by Mike Locke as an Octagonal 1872 Curly Haired Man 1/4. It is sometimes referred to as a Washington Head 1/4. This is a Type 1 small date with dot variety.
The jewelry box was issued by the William Stolz Company and dates from the early 20th century. Research shows this business was registered in 1903. The deep green box is printed with the maker's crest. It appears to be constructed of linen, hard paper and natural cotton.
