Proof Mintage 53

Sometimes referred to as a Pattern strike, but it was actually struck as part of a special proof set with a total of only 50 sets produced.

From what I understand, most went to various individuals in Mexico City while the remaining were acquired by Jed Crump at Pat Johnson Coin Co. and sold thru their Bid-or-Buy Catalogues in the late 1990’s. This particular coin was purchased thru one of those listings.

For whatever reason, this beautiful little coin which has an Olmec design was not the one selected by the Mexico City Mint for mass production. Instead, the mint chose the Madero 20c design and included that one in the 998 mint sets produced to the general public.
