Medal struck to commemorate the empty seat upon the death of Franz Ludwig Freiherr von Erthal (1730-1795). As the prince-bishop of Würzburg and Bamberg from 1779 to 1795, he was a champion of education and laid the foundation for early social welfare. Zepernick 71; Erlanger 2435; Heller 564. 48mm. 43.77 g. Medal designed by P. P. Werner.

S. Heinrich seated facing on throne, holding scepter and orb. Rev: Heinrich and Kunigunde standing left and right, respectively, heads facing one another, around altar bearing bishop’s regalia and coat-of-arms; rayed Eye of Providence above.
