Owner Comments:

MEXICO. Empire of Maximilian. 10 Centavos, 1864-M. NGC MS-65.
KM-386.1. Tied with two other examples for finest certified. A coin struck at the very beginning of Maximilian's great Mexican adventure, or great Mexican mis-adventure as it eventually became. In late April of 1864, Maximillian stepped down from his position as the Chief of The Naval Section in Austria, and headed for Mexico with the implicit backing of Napoleon III of France. Arriving in Veracruz in late May that same year, there never was a "Camelot" or honeymoon period, with staunch resistance from liberal forces led by President Benito Juarez encountered from the very start of his rule. It stands to reason given his date of arrival in mid-year, the coin offered here was struck at some point in the second half of 1864. Clearly a coin that was set aside almost the instant it was made, well struck and highly lustrous, and with clear evidence of die clashing adding yet another level of interest to be explored up close. A coin that rightfully belongs with the 5 Centavos in this collection. See it above this coin.
