Signed & Sketched by Joe Staton on 8/21/15 Baltimore Comic Con 2015. Thank You One Stop Comic Shop for setting up this commission.
This was submitted by Dan at One Stop Comic Shop and facilitated on my behalf. How I wish the old days of a $80 Joe Staton full body sketch still existed but times do change. Dan had done a couple different Scooby related sketches for me in a short range of time. CGC had accidentally changed the date of this one to reflect one of the other conventions. As at the time it was such a long wait I didn't wan't to (nor did I know back then) you could send back for mechanical error.
So this may be dated in August of 2015, it was really October of 2015.The grade date for this piece by CGC was, 12/08/15.

Signed and Sketch By: Joe Staton on 9/4/16 Baltimore Comic Con Scooby Doo Reading Mad Magazine Infinity Cover. This was the book that started it all!
My idea many years ago was to have Scooby Doo reading a Mad Magazine. Dan Partouche had the idea of making it an infinity cover and talked to Joe about it who loved the idea. After seeing the finished product, I loved it so much that I got Joe Staton over the span of many years to do each of the gang to do on. Original ID #1424159003

This is one of those rare times prior to the 2021-2022 bubble in which Joe Staton, didn't add the name of the show to the sketch commission. Unless of course, the show as titled 901?
Joe staton along with Steve Englehart created Kilowog for Green Lantern #201 which was when the Green Lantern title switched to Green Lantern Corps and it stayed for the remainder of the series which lasted about two more years.
You will periodically see online Kilowog paper sketches for sale from Joe Staton, but this was the first time I saw the opportunity to have a sketch cover. It was a eBay pickup.
The sketch date was 6/10/17 & CGC has the grade date as 07/25/17.

The concept and idea for this commission was a four year adventure. My first ever two day convention pass (I usually only do one day shows for traveling logistics as I almost always drive straight in and out same day the record is almost 8 hours of driving in one day.)
In 2017 I had that two day pass and was determined to have George Perez sketch a Scooby Doo wearing the Infinity Gauntlet as it would fit into my mix of having an artist draw something they are familiar with combined with Scooby. So I arrived at East Coast Comic Con determined to wait all day in line to find out that George had unfortunately had a heart attack that morning.
He retired and did very few shows past that time so I decided to try Joe Staton's hand at Scooby with the Infinity Gauntlet. This is the story of how I met Rich Henn. I was attending a small New Jersey Show in 2018 called Philipsburg Comic Con which is run by Philipsburg High School's art department and artist give back to the community.
Why did I first go to this show? You guessed it, Joe Staton was in attendance. Back then I didn't know about Rich Henn and Joe was doing at this time reduced rates so I did a sketch cover of Scooby as E-Man. Figuring I might submit it with the other guys or get it green labeled. Joe surprised me and did it with Scooby flying across both the front and back cover so I decided to just frame it perhaps after having E-man creditors sign and having Steve Lydic color it. Joe asked if I wanted it personalized which he has never asked me previously and I figured as it would be framed, this would be the one sketch from Joe with my name on it.
Anyway, we are getting away from the Gauntlet! So at this show there was a gray haired man talking to a comic artist with a set of two short boxes on a handcart. He and the artist appeared to be good friends or at least knew each other and the customer was talking about how much cash he had at the show when the artist asked and I had the sense then that the guy was either an ultimate comic fan with a CEO big business job or a facilitator. I always feel awkward asking strangers so I bit my tongue.
Fast forward two days and I found out my usual facilitator wasn't attending Heroes so I went on the boards for the first time and wouldn't you know, the gray haired man was a facilitator!!! He agreed to get Joe to do the sketch for me at Heroes and it took a long time for CGC to have it graded but alas it was mine. So fast forward to George Perez's last show and the last East Coast Comic Con show as COVID would destroy the giant and my favorite show.
I brought my book slabbed and was going to get is signed by the whole Gauntlet crew. They had a system though of certain times of the signings and cutting off on how many could get in line. I was always the last one so I never got George to sign it.
Then the pandemic hit and I figured it would never happen! Then George did a few private sigings during COVID. I had Dan at One Stop Comic Shop use his colorist Steve Lydic color the sketch and talks with George's manager ended up with my one George Perez signed book and one of my all-time top 5 sketch covers.
Thank you Rich Henn and Dan Partouche. Rest In Peace George Perez.

One of my Joe Staton goals, is to have a Scooby with characters that he either created or worked on mashed up together. I was able to do so at Garden State in which I had Joe have Scooby attempt to unmask Kilowog whom he created in Green Lantern #201 with Steve Englehart as the writer.
Garden State Comic Con 2019. Joe Staton double bust sketch. Scooby Doo attempting to unmask Kilowog. Facilitated through Agents of Slab. This was my first time branching out with a CGC facilitator that wasn't One Stop Comic Shop and Coach Dino is one of the nicest people to deal with. He is now the usual facilitator at the Winter and Summer shows so I don't have to worry about having unverified sketch covers as these are two staple shows for me.
More Joe Staton sketches exist in my collection, but for a couple year span, CBCS was facilitating this show so if you wanted a slabbed sketch cover, you had to use them (and for a span of time Joe would do this show each summer). I was unaware if any facilitator was facilitating, you can usually tell as there were nobody with short boxes on hand carts or large stacks of books with painter tape boxes.

The more conventional return to comic conventions has arrived after the 2020 shutdowns with more health implementations in place such as maskings, vaccination checks, and covid negative tests upon entering for Baltimore.
Baltimore and Heroes are two traditional shows where I have One Stop Comic Shop help to add to the Joe Staton collection. I had this one and the last in a themed Mad Magazine set where Scooby characters are doing a infinity theme of repeating the image over and over again in the cover.
This was also the short two year window 2021-2022 where Joe's prices fluctuated between big conventions and small and the factor of if his wife was present also reflected pricing. I was unaware at the time and it was definitely an ouch day for the wallet (especially as I had another sketch through Rich Henn) I figured this way if Dan had other clients wanting sketches it wouldn't get a rejection through Joe.

Dan Partouche had the idea of making it an infinity cover and I loved it so much that I got Joe Staton over the spand of many years to do each of the gang to do on.
This was the last in the series and the one I thought wouldn't happen once COVID hit. The opportunity arrived to add Frank Welker right around the time the world started shutting down but we didn't know that would happen at the time. Frank Welker signed with the character name Fred on 3/20/20. I originally planned on adding Freddie Prince Jr. to it but not after what Joe Staton did in 2021.
He did the Fred drawing at Baltimore 2021 but he incorporated Frank Welker's signature into the infinity sketch so it would have thrown it off!
Signed & Sketched By Joe Staton on 10/23/21 Fred Reading Mad Magazine Infinity Cover through Dan Partouche at Baltimore 2021. Dan added Frank Welker & "Fred" at Galaxy Con 3/20/20. "Really 2/20/20 but CGC messed up date."

Grader Notes: Unavailable (This was a 9.8 both times but did have to press it once Joe sketched as it was the first time he was ever a little rough on the cover then again, the MAD magazines are hard to get in a 9.8. At Baltimore 2021 I had requests through Dan Partouche and Rich Henn for Joe Staton this way, if other clients wanted sketches through Joe I wouldn't clog up one facilitator's list.
I was working late and had gotten the call on a Friday from Rich to tell Joe in person at the show what I wanted. The request was Scooby as the Riddler Joe got a huge laugh out of it and you could hear it over the phone. If you notice, this is Scooby as Riddler. You will find out more about why and how in the next installment on this list!

Baltimore Comic Con 2021: The story continues...
Rich Henn had facilitated for me on Friday of the show to have Joe Staton do a Scooby as Riddler. On Sunday Rich sent me a text. There was a problem, and in the words of Rich, "You are one lucky dog!"
Joe had forgotten which character he was supposed to draw and really got into Scooby as Joker. It was only after completing the sketch that he realized his mistake by checking his notes. Now most artist will chuck that off as a mistake and you deal with it. Not Joe, he is a true class act and just another reason why he is my favorite artist of all time.
Joe upon finding his mistake, started searching Baltimore comic con for a blank sketch cover similar to the type I had. I had the old Batman #0 blank so he picked up the newer Batman Detective #1 blank with the bats background. He then proceeded to do the requested sketch and when Rich went to pick it up, Joe shared he had made the mistake and there was no additional charges since it was his goof and I now had two full body sketches for the price of one.
Needless to say I was BEYOND excited and my reply was to please add it to my CGC submission. This is the one and only time that I will get 4 sketches by the same artist plus two remarques at one show.

Dan Partouche at One Stop Comic Shop has helped me with my Scooby obsession for years. To the point, he can go to Joe at a convention and he happily asks Dan what Scooby sketch will it be today. While I see Joe at a show, and he still doesn't recognize me...
Albeit, the majority of my requests are through facilitators but I have been seeing Joe once a year for 5 years. I'm ok with it though, it reminds me of a story he recently shared at a small show panel at Lehigh Valley Comic Show June 2023. He talked about how each time he came back to Marvel he was introduced to Stan Lee. Joe shared he was introduced several times because he wasn't quite sure that Stan recognized him. Each time of the introduction it was as if they met for the first time.
So in a sense, its a reversal here. Joe Staton is like my Stan Lee. Anyhoo, back to the story of this sketch. Dan was at his usual staple at the time of Heroes and you guessed it, Joe Staton was in appearance.
This is part of the series where I have Joe team up Scooby with another character that he had previously worked on. Fortunately, Joe returned to his usual habit of adding the show name to a show commission. Unfortunately, he now has a new set of prices that don't change based on show.
I can understand it as he is retired from doing the Dick Tracey daily strips so he is now technically retired with only shows and commissions to supplement his income. He is my favorite artist so I'll support when possible.
Plastic Man is "helping" Scooby eat Scooby Snacks.
