Owner Comments:
1516 Ducat of Leonhard von Keutschach, Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. He was the last to rule in the feudal style. He expelled the Jews from Salzburg in 1495 after they snuck back in after being already banished in 1404. His coat of arms features the big turnip seen on this coin. Only NGC example of this year.
A scarce date with only one other example in acsearch. This example has sold twice before the auction sale to me in October, 2025 by Kunker, at least as shown on acsearch: Once in 2020 at Fruhwald and once in 2022 at Numismatic Zottl. An inferior example sold in 2015 at Kunker. This coin starts my chain of "16" dated gold coins from 1516 to 2016 when my son was born. Hopefully he can add a seventh coin dated 2116. In 1416 coins were struck but not with specific dates, (except some Islamic coins perhaps), or if they did have dates they were not in Arabic numerals that we would recognize.
