1882 5C Liberty Nickel,
Judd-1685, Pollock-1887,
Rarity High R.7 / R8, PR63 BN PCGS
Only Two Confirmed
Struck in copper with a plain edge.
Obverse: The obverse is similar to that adopted for the regular issue Liberty nickel in 1883, but the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA has replaced the stars around the periphery.
Reverse:
The reverse depicts a large Roman numeral V within a wreath of corn and cotton with E PLURIBUS UNUM at the top.
Comment:
One of the precursors to the 1883 Liberty nickel, this pattern is similar to J1680-J1683/P1882-P1885 except that this pattern has finer dentilation on both sides and is slightly thinner in diameter - 21mm vs 22mm
The dies were also struck in nickel (Judd-1684) and aluminum (Judd-1686).
Just two Judd-1685 specimens are identified in the Saul Teichman roster. Orange-red is evident across this sharply detailed Select proof that also exhibits pleasing aquamarine overtones. Housed in a Generation 3.1 green label holder.
