Owner Comments:

Caracalla's name at birth was Lucius Septimius Bassianus. At the age of seven, he was renamed as part of his father's attempt at union with the families of Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. His new legal name, Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, appears on coins. "Carcalla" was a nickname derived from a long tunic worn by the Gauls, which he adopted as his favorite dress after he became Emperor. Caracalla's reign contributed to the decay of the empire and he is generally regarded as one of the most bloodthirsty tyrants in Roman history.
