The church was established in 1380 for the villagers of Deritend and was rebuilt in 1735 with the tower added in 1762. In 1939 the church was united with St. Basil’s and in 1947 St. John’s was torn down.
One of Peter Kempson's series of 45 pieces featuring 27 Birmingham buildings made for collectors. In the 19th century medalist John Ottley used the obverse tokens from the series to strike his own version of 26 of the tokens. St. John’s was the only token from the series that John Ottley did not strike his own version, it is assumed that the die broke.
