The 1974 Elizabeth II Sovereign
The First Sovereign Struck After Decimalisation
The second definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II was created by Arnold Machin and appeared on the United Kingdom’s new decimal coinage in 1968.
The first Sovereign to feature the new coinage portrait was not struck until 1974, making it the first Sovereign of the decimal era, and a 1974 Sovereign was the very last coin to be struck at our facility in Tower Hill, London.
