Gilbert Shearer owned a clothing shop at No. 47 Trongate, Glasgow. His shop was a noted gathering place for locals where they would swap gossip. The tokens were ordered from Matthew Boulton in the summer of 1791 and they were delivered by Boulton in two batches in October and December of that same year. The bronzed proofs would have been made as initial strikes for Shearer & Co to approve and also later for Gilbert to have as presentation pieces.
