Obverse: A view of St. John's, Hackney with its tower, clock and vane. To the left of the tower is a small shield of arms. In the ground on the left are the initials JM. HACKNEY CHURCH Ex: MCCXC
Reverse: The cypher DAR in ornamental script with a laurel wreath above, a crossed knife and palm branch below HACKNEY PROMISSORY TOKEN 1795

This is David Alves Rebello's private token. David Rebello was a merchant and avid coin collector, botanist, naturalist and collector of art. He died in 1796. The church was once part of the holdings of the Knights Templar. The church was pulled down and replaced shortly after the token was made. The tower still stands.
The token is usually regarded as the first private token of the series and was struck in small numbers (reportedly only 24 were struck but more likely twice that number).
