Lev Landau, 1908-1968, Soviet-Azerbaijani physicist who made fundamental contributions to many areas of theoretical physics. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1962 for his work on superfluidity. Ukraine and Russia each issued coins in 2008 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth.
