Samuel Johnson, the son of a bookseller in Lichfield, was born on September 18, 1709. From an early age he showed signs of great intellect and excelled in Latin and the English language. He attended Pembroke College, Oxford until his funds ran out. He made lasting contributions as a poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. He is best known for his book ‘A Dictionary of the English Language’. He died on 13 December 1784.
