The Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site quarter is Alabama’s America the Beautiful Quarters Program coin, last in the 11-year series.
OBVERSE DESIGN
The obverse of the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site quarter features a modified version of John Flanagan's 1932 portrait of President George Washington. The modification was authorized by special legislation in 1999 and included reducing the size of Washington's portrait to include some of the wording previously used on the reverse. The modification was carried out by Mint sculptor-engraver William Cousins, whose initials were added to the truncation of Washington's neck adjacent to those of the original designer, John Flanagan. Inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST'' and "QUARTER DOLLAR".
REVERSE DESIGN
The reverse depicts a Tuskegee Airman suiting up to join the fight during World War II, with the Moton Field control tower in the background. The pilot looks upward with pride and confidence as two P-51 Mustangs pass overhead. The inscription “THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS” is arced across the top as a reference to the dual battles the Tuskegee Airmen fought— fascism abroad and racial discrimination at home. Inscriptions are "TUSKEGEE AIRMEN," "ALABAMA," "2021," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
