Owner Comments:

1849 is associated with the California gold rush at Sutter’s Mill when gold was discovered. The resulting influx of people looking to strike it rich vastly and suddenly increased the population of the State. Not all people became rich from mining while others who set up merchant stores to provide these miners with the goods needed to mine did make a fortune in selling goods to them.Compared to the gold that was mined here and eventually was minted into gold coins the 1849 1/2 Cent Large Date coin I have listed here in my collection might not compare but it was just as important in making change for transactions at the mining camps that sprange up in California.
