The old Market Cross was built at the beginning of the 16th century at the Rotunda in Cornhill and taken down in 1812.
James Conder (1763-1823) was a linen draper on Tavern Street, Ipswich. James was an ardent collector of these tokens and authored what became the standard reference on the tokens until it was superseded by that of Atkins in 1892.
