Owner Comments:

Struck in 1618 during the rule of Maximilian III, Archduke of Austria. The taler has been included in this set as a peripheral issue due to the title of Grandmaster in the Teutonic Order held by Archduke Maximilian starting in 1585. The Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem, also known as the Teutonic Order, has a storied history as a Catholic religious order. Dating to 1192, the Teutonic Order was formed to aid Christians on their pilgrimages to the Holy Land and to establish hospitals. The order's influence peaked in the early 1400s with its holdings spanning across Europe and the Balkans.
