William Wallace was a native of Ayrshire who vowed to free Scotland from English rule. He gathered an army and defeated the English at the battle of Cambuskenneth in 1298. During the captivity of the King of Scotland William was appointed Regent but later resigned. He carried on a guerrilla war after the defeat of the Scots at Falkirk but was betrayed to the hands of King Edward I who had him executed as a traitor.
