Work began on the Gothic Revival castle in 1743, replacing an earlier 15th century castle. The Argyll family have been landed proprietors seated at Inveraray since the 14th century when it was a fishing village. The reverse is likely a specious token die for Thomas Gorton which appears on several Skidmore tokens.
One of a number of tokens struck for sale to collectors by Paul Skidmore.
Atkins: Argyllshire 2
