Obv: Scene of John the Baptist baptizing Christ in the river Jordan / Rev: Ten-line inscription references three verses from the bible which focus on baptism: Galatians 3:26-27, Titus 3:5-7, and 1 Peter 3:21. Denomination "2" stamped at the bottom. Approx 63 mm; 52 g
A tauftaler is a taler-style medal minted by the Zellerfeld mint in Harz. Often called a Baptismal taler, these were struck in the 1600s and 1700s and presented by the godfather of a newborn to the family or parents of the baby. Several varieties were produced and are most commonly attributed using the Katsouros or Knyphausen catalogue references. The Harz issued talers are not included in the standard Davenport catalogues.
