Owner Comments:

A nice example of an early American gold piece struck during “Hard Times” in the United States. This coin is graded AU-58 by NGC - just a whisker away from uncirculated and with some hints of luster also having great eye appeal for an early American gold piece. An economic slowdown had put the country into what we would refer to as a “Depression” today.Andrew Jackson was serving his second term as President and Martin Van Buren was Vice President at the time this coin was produced in Philadelphia.Another point of interest in 1836 was the formation of the Wisconsin Territory as our nation was continuing to grow. Also of great interest that year was the admission of Arkansas as our nation’s 25th State.Despite opposition in Congress Arkansas was admitted to the Union as a Slave State and would later fight on the side of the Confederacy during the War of Rebellion otherwise better know as the Civil War.
