SHIPWRECK COIN - INDIA-BRITISH 10 CASH 1808 MADRAS PRESIDENCY This coin is from the WRECK of the ADMIRAL GARDNER, one of three EAST INDIA COMPANY ships, sunk during Gale winds on the Goodwin Sands off Kent , en route from London to the East Indies on JANUARY 25, 1809 just after midnight. This ship was loaded with some 46 tons of of COPPER coins struck at the SOHO mint. The other two ships were the Brittania and the Carnatic. The wreck was found in 1984, and this coin was taken a year later from a sealed barrel containing 28,000 pieces. This coin was one of the first in the world to be minted by steam power press.
