For the first time, new 2016-dated 1 oz. silver, 2 oz. silver and, 5 oz. silver Pandas commemorate little Bei Bei. The obverse of each coin features Bei Bei, as he glances at his reflection in a pond. The reverse of each silver coin depicts the Great Wall of China, along with the Smithsonian Castle on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Everyone loves Silver Pandas and big five-ounce silver proofs. Both come together in this 2016 five-ounce Smithsonian Silver Panda Proof. The award-winning China Mint has issued Silver Pandas every year since 1983. For 2016, the China Mint and the Smithsonian Institution released these special-issue Panda Silver Proofs, available exclusively here. Struck in five ounces of 99.9% pure proof silver, each Smithsonian Panda Silver Proof features the National Zoo's current youngster panda pair: Bao Bao and Bei Bei.

While this 5 oz. silver Bei Bei panda medal was struck by the China Mint, it is part of a cooperative effort between the China Mint and the Smithsonian. Like previous panda medals, mintage is very limited. Only 1,000 of these will be issued.

This medal displays the Great Wall of China, the Smithsonian Castle, and the date on the obverse. This design symbolizes the joint effort of the program. On the reverse Bei Bei is pictured with Bao Bao. Bao Bao is his older sister and she is just above him looking down.

The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) was selected to grade and encapsulated this 5 oz. silver Bei Bei medal. Using their 70 point grading scale, they awarded it the grade of Proof 70. This is the highest grade a proof specimen can receive. Since it displays exceptional visual contrast, it was also given the Ultra Cameo designation.
