Great Britain has had a number of storied Monarchs, from Richard III to Henry VIII to George III and beyond. But when the future history books are written, Queen Elizabeth II may be honored as one of the most important rulers of Great Britain of all time. This year marks her 90th birthday, and to celebrate this signal event, the island nation of Tristan da Cunha issued this 2016 One-Ounce Silver Queen Elizabeth II 90th birthday, graded in perfect Proof 70 by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.

The coin features a portrait of her majesty on the obverse by U.S. Mint coin designer Joel Iskowitz. The reverse displays a lion and unicorn holding up the British crown enclosing the dates 1916 and 2016. The denomination of 'one crown' rests beneath the Royal Beasts and 'H.M. Queen Elizabeth II 90th Birthday' circles above them. In 2015 The Queen became not only the longest reigning monarch in British history, surpassing her Great-Great Grandmother Queen Victoria, but she is also the oldest British monarch ever, surpassing Queen Victoria and King George III who both lived to the age of 82.

A dizzying panoply of events stretch with her through the years: The Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War and the dissolution of the vast British Empire, the wedding and subsequent divorce of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, just to name a few.

The coin is one-ounce of 99.9% pure silver. Only 2,500 have been minted.
