Rarity: High R.7, PR64RB

Ex: Simpson

Struck in copper with a plain edge.

Obverse: Bust of Liberty wearing a Cap ornamented with 2 stars and a ribbon flows down and around her shoulder with LIBERTY inscribed with RAISED letters. There is no initial “B” in the folds at the back of Liberty neck on this variety. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA wraps around the top perimeter and our Mottos IN GOD WE TRUST is within a scroll below. This variety also has the tip of the cap under the second “S” in STATES

Reverse: The denomination 50 CENTS in the center of a wreath of oak and laurel. The date 1870 is below and outside of the wreath and boarder on each side by a star. The inscription, “STANDARD SILVER” is above the wreath above.

Comment:
This is a splendidly toned specimen Deep golden brown with reflective fields and frosty motifs alive with varied blue and rose. Fully struck, satiny, and unabraded with a few minor and unimportant obverse spots.

Two different obverse dies with Liberty raised on the scroll were used on these. They differ, primarily, in the arrangement of the head to the letters in the word STATES. This [Judd-972] has the tip of the cap under the second S in STATES and does not have Barber's initial B in the folds of the ribbon at the back of Liberty's cap.
