The following biography is taken from the US Mint's web site:James Buchanan's Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin President, 1857–1861 President James Buchanan was not married. The obverse (heads side) design of James Buchanan's Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin is a reproduction of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle designed by Christian Gobrecht minted and issued from 1840 through 1907, with the inscriptions LIBERTY, 2010, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1857 and 1861, and 15th PRESIDENCY. The reverse (tails) design, by Artistic Infusion Program Associate Designer David Westwood, depicts the future President as a boy working as a bookkeeper in his family's small country store.
