Wilhelmina was formally enthroned on September 6, 1898, upon reaching her eighteenth birthday. The coin was designed by the sculptor Pier Pander using Wilhelmina's inauguration portrait at age eighteen.

The 1898 coins were actually minted in 1900 but were dated 1898 to honor Wilhelmina's inauguration.

This example's variety is "without dot," that is, there is no dot between the designer's first-name initial "P" and last name "PANDER." The inscription "P PANDER" appears below the bust. The variety "without dot" is said to be scarcer than "with dot" but exact mintages are not known. The online coin catalogue numista.com reports that a census of its users who own this date shows that about twice as many own the "with dot" variety as own the "without dot" variety.
