Key date!
All known 1724 Netherlands gold ducats were recovered from the Akerendam shipwreck with only 6,505 coins thought to exist. The Akerendam was a Dutch ship that sank in a storm off the coast of Norway.
The fact that this ducat shows no signs whatsoever of salt water contamination or wear implies that someone took it home from the mint in their pocket before it could be packed and put aboard the ship. Perhaps it just fell off the truck on the way!
