SC$1 1933 CA HK-682 SANTA MONICA BREAKWATER:
So-Called Dollars are dollar-sized tokens and medals that commemorate significant regional and national events like fairs, public-works projects, and dedications. This souvenir medal struck by the Los Angeles Rubber Stamp Company commemorates the construction of the Santa Monica breakwater. The purpose of this project was to build a yacht harbor adjacent to the Santa Monica Pier.
With an amusement park as a background, the obverse of this medal features a reclining woman leisurely enjoying a day at the beach. Accordingly, the imagery on this medal represents nothing more than the enjoyment of recreational activities at the Santa Monica Pier.
The reverse shows an overhead view of the beach, pier, harbor, and breakwater. The following link is a timeline of the Santa Monica Pier’s history, from its construction in 1909 through the present.
