Owner Comments:

Taler issued by Halberstadt in present day Saxony-Alhalt. Originally founded during the reign of Charlemagne in 814.
The bishops of Halberstadt obtained the rights for a mint in the 10th century. From 1479, the diocese was administrated by the Archbishops of Magdeburg. The diocese converted to protestantism in 1540 near the time this taler was minted. For collectors of talers, it should be noted that the cathedral chapter elected Prince Henry Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel first Lutheran bishop in 1566, a lineage synonymous with notable numismatic history. Zepernick 296, Schulten 1035
