During their last years, Jefferson and John Adams, once Jeffersons Secretary of State, renewed their deep friendship, and in an astounding twist of fate both men died on July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson was 83 years old at the time of his death.
